Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) commonly used in a variety of skincare products for its exfoliating properties. Derived originally from the bark of willow trees, it has a long history of medicinal use dating back thousands of years. This acid is lipid-soluble, allowing it to penetrate the skin's oily surfaces and delve deeper into the pores. As a result, it can effectively exfoliate both the skin's surface and the interior walls of the pores. This unique capability makes it especially beneficial for treating acne-prone and oily skin, as it helps to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and shed dead skin cells.

In addition to its exfoliating attributes, salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a popular ingredient in treatments for acne, warts, corns, and various other skin conditions. Its ability to reduce inflammation can help calm redness and soothe irritated skin. Moreover, salicylic acid is also present in some over-the-counter pain and fever relief medications, such as aspirin, due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Whether utilised as a skincare ingredient or as a medicinal compound, salicylic acid has proved to be a versatile and valuable component in a wide array of products.
